Concrete Sand vs. Masonry Sand

Concrete sand is coarser and more angular than masonry sand, which helps it lock into the cement paste matrix for stronger concrete. It meets ASTM C33 specifications for fine aggregate in concrete and is not interchangeable with masonry sand in mortar mixes — they serve different structural roles.

Common Applications

  • Masonry & Mortar Masonry sand (brown or white) mixed with cement for block and brick.
  • Concrete Mixes Concrete sand as coarse fine aggregate.
  • Plastering & Stucco Stucco sand for exterior plaster finishes.
  • Fill & Leveling Manufactured sand for fill, leveling, and compaction.
  • Specialty Trade Uses Ultra fines and red sand for specific applications.
