The most common question we get: "How many tons of road base do I need for my driveway?" Here's the straightforward math:
Measure the length and width in feet. For irregular shapes, break into rectangles.
New driveway or parking lot: plan for 4–6 inches compacted. Top-up only: 2–3 inches.
L × W × depth (ft) = cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply by density for tons. Our calculator does this automatically.
Always order a little extra. Compaction and uneven subgrade eat into your calculated volume.
50 × 20 × (4/12) = 333 cu ft → 12.3 cu yds → 18.5 tons of road base. With 10% overage: order ~20 tons.
